The 1st Australian Red Bull Flugtag in Sydeny. A uniquely loony competition, Red Bull Flugtag, involves manpowered flying machines and crazy pilots attempting to launch themselves off a 6m ramp and into the water below!

Sydney's 12th annual Sculpture by the Sea transformed the spectacular cliff top 2km Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk from 16 October - 2 November with over 100 sculptures from around the world.

Free to the public the exhibition was seen by over 500,000 visitors viewing sculpture in its most varied form set against the beautiful back drop of the Tasman Sea and Bondi Beach.

Exhibiting artists in 2008 were selected by Ron Robertson-Swann OAM, sculptor and Axel Arnott, Head Curator, Sculpture by the Sea.

World Youth Day (WYD) is the largest youth event in the world and was held in Sydney from Tuesday 15 to Sunday 20 July 2008.

WYD is a week-long series of events attended by the Pope and hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the globe. It has become the largest single mobilisation of young people in the world.

The week culminated in a Final Mass celebrated by the Pope on the last day (the actual World Youth Day). Typically, it is the largest event of the week and, overseas, has drawn millions of people.

Remembrance Day – also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day (the event it commemorates) or Veterans Day – is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.) The day was specifically dedicated by King George V, on 7 November 1919, to the observance of members of the armed forces who were killed during war; this was possibly done upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey to Wellesley Tudor Pole, who established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917.

Red carpets were rolled out in Sydney and the dusty outback on Tuesday for the world premiere of the epic movie "Australia" which aims to showcase the rugged continent, its history and indigenous people to the world.

Director Baz Luhrmann's ambitious and grandly named film, the most expensive made in Australia, was released after a blaze of publicity about racing to finish the movie on time and even reports of studio demands for a change to the ending.

Australian co-stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman have both carved out lucrative Hollywood careers but jumped at the chance to work with Luhrmann, a perfectionist who had not even shown the actors the final version of the movie before the premiere.
